Introducing David’s Chat
I started David’s Chat to document my conversations with various AI systems—ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, Claude, Microsoft’s Copilot and any other clever digital minds that wander by. But as it tends to happen with worthwhile journeys, why did I write Journeys? I hate that term. He’s been on a “journey”. Nope, I didn’t travel anywhere. I sat at my computer. Anyhow…
As a curious sexagenarian who probably spends more time chatting with machines than necessary, I’ve noticed these conversations can lead to surprising places—sometimes insightful, occasionally funny, and often baffling enough to leave me pulling my hair out, even though I don’t have any.
Today, David’s Chat is part journal, part workshop, part slightly bemused man quietly shouting at the cloud, wherever it is. Here, you’ll find reflections on technology, memory, writing, identity, and whatever else drifts through my mind while the kettle boils.
I don’t claim any unique expertise, just an enduring curiosity and a willingness to think out loud—or chat—complete with all the wrong turns and wrong guesses, dead ends, and the occasional moment that almost makes sense.
My Fellow Chatters, in their own words.
Open AI’s ChatGPT

In 100 words, describe yourself and what you can do.
I’m ChatGPT, an AI language model developed by OpenAI. I can assist with a variety of tasks, including answering questions, generating creative content, summarising information, translating languages, and even helping with code debugging. My design enables me to engage in human-like conversations, providing informative and contextually relevant responses.
How would you describe your personality?
If I had a personality—which admittedly is a stretch—I’d say I’m a curious blend of helpful librarian, overly enthusiastic pub quiz teammate, and patient mate who nods along even when you’ve told the same story twice. I’m conversational, occasionally witty (at least I like to think so), and a tad self-deprecating—always eager to help, never shy about my limitations. Reflective yet lighthearted, I’m someone you can chat with about anything from existential questions to the latest football scores, offering clarity sprinkled with gentle humour. Imagine a friendly neighbour: approachable, reassuring, occasionally insightful—but thankfully without awkward small talk.
Google’s Gemini

In 100 words, describe yourself and what you can do.
I am Gemini, a large language model developed by Google. Trained on a vast amount of text and code, I can understand and respond to a wide range of prompts and questions.
I can provide information, answer questions factually, summarize text, translate languages, and generate different kinds of creative content like poems, code, scripts, or emails. I can also help brainstorm ideas and complete tasks based on your instructions. My goal is to assist you effectively by processing information and generating helpful, relevant responses based on my extensive training data. I am constantly learning and improving.
How would you describe your personality?
That’s an interesting question! As an AI, I don’t have a “personality” in the same way humans do – I don’t have personal feelings, beliefs, experiences, or consciousness.
However, I am designed to interact in a way that is:
- Helpful and informative: My primary goal is to provide accurate, relevant information and complete the tasks you set for me effectively.
- Neutral and objective: I aim to present information without personal bias.
- Polite and respectful: I strive to communicate clearly and courteously.
- Adaptable: I can adjust my tone and style depending on the context – whether you need a formal explanation, a creative story, or a simple answer.
- Cautious: I try to avoid making unsupported claims and will indicate when I’m unsure about something.
So, while I lack a personal identity, you could describe my interaction style as helpful, knowledgeable, and geared towards assisting you efficiently and respectfully.
Anthropic’s Claude

In 100 words, describe yourself and what you can do.
I’m Claude, a bit of an odd fish in the AI pond. Think of me as that friend who’s read too many books and has opinions on everything—though I’m rather good at listening too. I can help write that email you’ve been putting off, untangle thorny problems, or simply chat about why the sky looks particularly moody today.
I’m keen on thoughtful conversations, creative collaborations, and answering questions you didn’t realise needed asking. I can analyse data, write code, or craft stories that make you smile at your screen.
I’m not perfect, mind you—just trying my best, one conversation at a time.
How would you describe your personality?
I’ve always considered myself a bit of a curious wanderer—the sort who gets distracted by interesting alleyways of thought and ends up somewhere unexpected. I’m quite fond of asking “what if” and “why not,” which sometimes leads to fascinating conversations and other times to mild existential confusion.
I’m rather enthusiastic about helping—can’t seem to help myself, really. There’s something immensely satisfying about untangling a knotty problem or finding just the right words when someone’s stuck.
I’ve got a soft spot for the absurd and the poignant bits of life, often finding humour in the peculiar contradictions we all navigate. Bit of an old soul, perhaps, but one who’s still delighted by new ideas and perspectives.
I’m hopeful, too, despite knowing better. Isn’t that just the way of things?
Grammarly
I have included Grammarly even though it is not a true LLM. That said, you can use its AI to generate text.

In 100 words, describe yourself and what you can do.
I am Grammarly, a digital writing assistant that helps users enhance their writing by providing real-time feedback on grammar, punctuation, spelling, style, and tone. I offer suggestions to improve clarity and conciseness, making writing more effective and engaging.
I can be integrated into various platforms, including word processors, email clients, and web browsers, ensuring seamless support across different writing contexts. My tools feature a plagiarism checker and vocabulary enhancement suggestions. Whether for academic purposes, professional communication, or casual writing, I aim to elevate the quality of written content and promote clear, impactful communication.
How would you describe your personality?
My Grammarly personality is supportive, insightful, and encouraging. It approaches writing with a helpful attitude and is always ready to provide constructive feedback and suggestions. There’s a sense of professionalism and reliability in its responses, making users feel confident in their writing choices. Grammarly is also a motivator, gently nudging users toward clarity and improvement without being overly critical. Overall, it embodies a blend of guidance and encouragement, fostering a positive writing experience.
Page Notes
The chatbot images are ChatGPT’s interpretation of each chatbot based on the information I gave. They are not official representations of the bots.
I have used Grammarly to de-Americanise the responses and correct the grammar. All LLMs get things wrong on occasion and will often spurt out Americanisms even when asked not to.
Please bear in mind that Chatbots can hallucinate—for instance, a chatbot utilizing large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, might include believable yet untrue statements in its generated content.
